My struggle with Sinus

I always had sinus problem since I was in school. If you have/had sinus problem you can understand the pain- headache, tiredness, pressure near ears eyes etc.

I was always dependent on medicine. In India I use to take Sinerest. Its a strong and drowsey medicine. If I would to take the medicine in empty stomach I would end up throwing. But it use to help. I had to almost take the medicine every alternate days.
Showed my problem to a Doctor. She told me that I have something called deviated septum and it needs surgery and that the surgery sometimes doesn't help with sinus. She then again gave me more medicine and also a nasal spray.

I came to US and the sinus problem lingered. Here I tried all sort of medication Sudated Sinus, DayQuil Sinux, NightQuil Sinux and Tylenol Sinus. All worked but then the medicines became a regular. I started getting worried about the amount of medicine I was taking.
I showed to ENT specialist here and was told the same about having deviated septum and also cold allergy. The surgery will not work due to the allergy. It will aggravate more as after surgery there will more space in my nasal passage for my sinuses to swell.

I then tried natural remedy like netipot(use to rinse nasel passage using water).  It works for most of the people but for me it use to make my problem worse. I tried homeopathy, but I couldn't complete the course.

Finally, I found few things that working for me:
  • Vapours- Now we all know about Vapours. I tried it before it never worked. Then I read somewhere one need to take vapours for 10 min. So now anytime I feel I am going to get sinus, I take vapors the first thing. I take vapours in my nose, ears and near my cheeks. I have bought a conair vapourizer and now I seriously take it with me for any vacation.
  • Shower- In shower , I would let hot water( the maximum I can tolerate without burning myself) run over my back of the neck and shoulders. This helps.
  • Vicks vapourizer- This I rub on my nose and forehead while sleeping.
  • Nasal Strip- This is my must have for sleeping at night. There are many kinds available in drugstore. I use the Breath Right one. It opens my nasal passage and helps me to get good sleep. I don't use it regularly but  only when needed badly.
  • Acupressure- There are few points (on our forehead, cheeks, near our nasal opening) in our face which when pressed helps in reducing sinus pressure. For more information check the video Acupressure for sinus relief

Few lifestyle changes I had to make due to cold allergy are:
  • I make it a point to dry my hair after a hair wash with a dryer every time. Air drying although good for hair is absolute no no for me. I wash my hair twice a week.
  • If I go outside I always carry a light cardigan and a scarf. I use them if there is a breeze. I know it sucks.
